The Traction Avant of 1934 was the worlds first front-wheel drive car with a welded monocoque body . The suspension was way ahead of its time too. It gave the car a low-slung and rather sexy look. Known in Britain as the Light 15, this was the car that carried the pipe-smoking detective Maigret around Paris; the car that rippled over the wet cobbles in so many of those old French films. This progress through technology came at a price - Citroen went bankrupt in the same year!
